Toshiba announces new HDMI to MIPI DSI bridge IC

Toshiba Electronics has today announced the introduction of a new High Definition Multimedia Interface to MIPI Display Serial Interface bridge IC, the T358779XBG. This is the first device to enable HDMI video and audio output to be converted and processed as a MIPI DSI video stream for the small form-factor LCD displays used in many consumer and industrial applications.

The new IC enables the application processors used to drive traditional larger displays to also interface with smaller, mobile consumer and industrial products fitted with small form-factor LCD displays that require MIPI DSI input. Samples are currently available and mass production is scheduled to start in December this year.

By providing integrated on-chip support for video processing, video de-interlacing, video scaling and video format conversion, the T358779XBG, significantly reduces memory bandwidth and video processing requirements on the host processor. Up-down scaling and colour-space conversion allows output from the application processor to be formatted and scaled to match the display panel’s output resolution and colour format.

Toshiba’s T358779XBG supports common 3D video formats and protocols compatible with the HDMI 1.4 standard at resolutions up to 1920 x 1200 and refresh rates of 60fps. Interface speeds of up to 4Gbps to an LCD display panel are achieved using four data lanes at a maximum 1Gbps/lane link speed.

Multiple audio interfaces including I2S, TDM, S/PDIF and MIPI Serial Low-power Inter-chip Media Bus audio formats are supported making the IC suitable for a wide range of audio video applications.

Available as an 80-pin device for non-HDMI boards, it measures just 7.0mm x 7.0mm, with 0.65 mm ball pitch and 1.0 mm maximum height.
